Haines Economic Development Corp. is a nonprofit corporation with a mission to realize economic development in Haines Borough through research, community engagement, and strategic planning.
The corporation was conceived in anticipation of primary funding from the Haines Borough, and is accountable to the Haines Borough and the HEDC board of directors for administration of funds. The HEDC is governed by its Board of Directors. The Haines Borough Assembly in September 2017 awarded HEDC funding for FY2018 from its Fund 23, which is collected as 1 percent of sales tax for Tourism and Economic Development. Future public funding relies on the organization’s accomplishment of first year goals as outlined in an MOU with Haines Borough, as well as community support for the work of HEDC. HEDC is organized under the IRS code 501c3, so its operations are limited to charitable or educational, but because it qualifies as publicly supported, and also because its initiatives lessens the burden of government, its work in economic development will be recognized as tax exempt by the IRS.
