Haines Economic Development Corporation, in partnership with the Haines Borough, will be working on producing a report that studies the social and economic impacts during the exploration phase of the Palmer project.
What we hope to achieve with this report:
- Informed Decision-Making:
- Understanding the social and economic implications of a mine helps stakeholders make informed decisions.
- It provides insights into potential benefits and risks, allowing for balanced choices.
- Community Well-Being:
- Mines often operate in close proximity to communities.
- A thorough study assesses how mining activities may impact livelihoods, health, and quality of life.
- Mitigation measures can be designed to enhance community well-being.
- Local Employment and Income:
- Mining projects create jobs and income.
- Socioeconomic studies evaluate the employment potential, wages, and local economic linkages.
- This information guides policies to maximize local benefits.
- Social Equity and Inclusion:
- Mines can exacerbate social inequalities.
- It informs strategies for inclusive development and can set the precedent for responsible Corporate Social Investment within the community.
- Infrastructure and Services:
- Mines require infrastructure (roads, water supply, healthcare).
- Socioeconomic assessments identify gaps and guide investments in social infrastructure.
- Long-Term Planning:
- Mines operate for decades.
- A study considers long-term effects on communities, economies, and ecosystems.
- It informs post-mining transition planning.
We seek the community’s input on these topics. Please use the form below to submit your comment:
