As we do each quarter, HEDC gave an update to the Haines Borough Assembly in March on our recent work. You can read the update below.

Dear Haines Borough Assembly members,

We’re excited to present you with highlights of our ongoing work and recent accomplishments toward economic development in Haines. Since completing the Five-Year Economic Plan in November, we’ve focused our efforts on accomplishing key actions listed under the first three of four objectives outlined in the plan: Increasing community economic development awareness and engagement; strengthening economic foundations; and enhancing the local business climate and stimulating economic activity. Here are some highlights:

  • We’re partnering with the Alaska Small Business Development Center to offer more workshops, advising and other resources to Haines entrepreneurs and business owners;
  • We’re partnering with the Greater Haines Chamber of Commerce and with a matching grant from the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation to continue the “By Haines” campaign;
  • We’re working with the Haines Borough to research the economic effects of the biomass project and undertaking an analysis of the borough’s critical infrastructure;

and much more. We have outlined our work since the beginning of the fiscal year in detail on the attachments. You can see what specific objective they relate to in the Haines Economic Five-Year Plan. Each of these objectives also align with specific actions for economic development in the Haines Borough Comprehensive Plan.
