Chilkat Valley Outdoor Initiative

The Chilkat Valley Outdoor Initiative was created to expand outdoor recreation opportunities for the Haines community. This project emerged from the 2023 Recreation Economy for Rural Communities workshop, where over 45 community members contributed to shaping the vision for outdoor recreation in Haines. Seed-funded by the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable, the initiative is designed to enhance local access to nature, improve community health, and foster appreciation for our natural environment.

Our Goals

Accessible Recreation: Offering outdoor activities for all skill levels and ages, from hiking and biking to kayaking and wildlife exploration.

Community Engagement: Organizing workshops, guided tours, and outdoor events to promote participation and outdoor education.

Sustainable Development: Balancing recreational expansion with environmental conservation, ensuring the longevity of our natural resources.

What We Offer

Monthly Outings: Explore local trails, rivers, and wilderness through guided monthly adventures for all experience levels.

Starts November 2024

Workshops & Clinics: Learn new outdoor skills through hands-on workshops and clinics covering fishing, camping, kayaking, and nature photography. Details to be announced on our website and social media pages, and advertised on KHNS and Chilkat Valley News.

The event kicks off with a photography workshop with Rachel Deehan on October 9. Learn more here or sign up here.

Equipment Rental (Pending funding): No gear? No problem! We provide equipment rentals for hiking, camping, kayaking, and more to make the outdoors accessible to everyone.

Funding and Support

We are actively seeking funding to expand some of our programs, ensuring that they remain accessible and affordable for all. Your support helps us continue growing and providing valuable outdoor experiences for the community.
